Wyoming Wildlife
Jackson Hole is one of the best places in the country to view wildlife. In the winter deep snow forces many of these animals off their summer range to lower elevations.
One such animal is the Elk. Jackson Hole is home to one of the largest elk herds in the world. In the fall as the snow starts to pile up, elk migrate long distances to their winter range. Thousands of the wapiti in the Jackson Hole Elk Herd make their way to the National Elk Refuge – just north of the town of Jackson. Here they are fed alfalfa pellets from about January to April. This feeding program is vital to the survival of a large percentage of these elk.
Visiting the elk refuge during the winter is a great experience and a lot of fun. We were given the opportunity to take a tour of the refuge the other morning while they were out feeding the elk. Enjoy this short video, showing our morning on the National Elk Refuge.
